How to Play Klondike Solitaire
The goal is to move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, sorted by suit from Ace to King.
The layout
- Tableau — 7 columns of cards. The top card in each column is face-up.
- Foundations — 4 piles (top-right), one per suit. Build them Ace → 2 → 3 → ... → King.
- Stock — the remaining cards, face-down. Flip cards from it to draw new ones.
- Waste — the face-up pile next to the stock.
Basic rules
- In the tableau, stack cards in descending order, alternating colors (red 8 on black 9, for example)
- Only Kings can move to empty tableau columns
- Move cards from the waste pile to the tableau or foundations
- Flip stock cards when you run out of moves
- Win by moving all cards to the foundations
Solitaire Strategy — How to Win More Often
Expose face-down cards first
Your primary goal in the early game is not to build foundations — it's to reveal face-down cards in the tableau. Each flip gives you new options. Prioritize moves that uncover hidden cards over moves that simply stack face-up ones.
Build foundations evenly
Keep the four foundation piles within 1-2 cards of each other. If one suit races far ahead, you may not be able to use those high cards to help organize the tableau, locking yourself into a losing position.
Empty columns are powerful — use them wisely
An empty tableau column can hold any King (and its stack). Don't rush to fill empty columns with any King — wait for one that has useful cards underneath it, especially if those help unlock face-down cards in other columns.
Don't draw from the stock too early
Exhaust your tableau moves before drawing from the stock. The stock is a finite resource. Drawing early and cycling through it burns through opportunities without maximizing available moves.
Think two moves ahead
Before making any move, ask: what does this enable? Moving a red 6 onto a black 7 is good — but only if the black 7 isn't blocking another card you need. Solitaire rewards players who visualize consequences, not just immediate fits.
History of Solitaire
Solitaire originated in 18th-century Northern Europe, likely Scandinavia or Germany, as a competitive two-player game before evolving into a solo format. Klondike — the most popular variant — was named after the Klondike region of Canada during the 1890s Gold Rush, though its exact origin is disputed.
Microsoft bundled Solitaire with Windows 3.0 in 1990. The official reason was to teach users how to use a mouse (dragging cards = mouse practice). Unofficially, it made PCs feel fun. Windows Solitaire became the most-used computer program of all time by pure hours logged, with hundreds of millions of players over three decades.
Solitaire Variants Worth Knowing
Klondike (the standard): 7 tableau columns, draw from stock. What most people mean by "Solitaire."
Spider Solitaire: Two decks, 10 columns. Build full suits from King to Ace and remove them. Much harder.
FreeCell: All cards are face-up from the start. 4 free cells for temporary storage. Mostly solvable with perfect play.
Pyramid: Remove pairs of cards that add up to 13. Luck-dependent but quick.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is every Solitaire game winnable?
No. Roughly 79% of Klondike Solitaire games are theoretically winnable, but in practice a skilled player wins about 43% of games due to information hidden by face-down cards. Don't feel bad when you lose — some games are simply unwinnable from the deal.
Can I play Solitaire on my phone?
Yes. TinyJoy's Solitaire is fully mobile-optimized. Tap and drag cards with your finger just like on desktop.
Does TinyJoy Solitaire cost anything?
No. It's completely free — no ads blocking the cards, no premium unlock required.
What's the difference between draw-1 and draw-3 Solitaire?
In draw-1, you flip one card at a time from the stock. In draw-3, you flip three. Draw-3 is harder because you can only access every third card. TinyJoy uses draw-1 for a more approachable experience.
