How Minesweeper Works

The grid contains hidden mines. Your job: reveal every square that isn't a mine.

• Click a square to reveal it
• Numbers show how many mines are in the 8 adjacent squares
• Flag squares you think contain mines (right-click on desktop, long-press on mobile)
• Reveal all non-mine squares to win
• Click a mine — you lose

The first click is always safe. Most Minesweeper implementations (including TinyJoy's) guarantee your first click won't detonate a mine.

Minesweeper Strategy — How to Win Consistently

Start in a corner or the center

First clicks in corners often reveal large empty areas. The center of the board gives you visibility in all directions and often cascades into a big safe reveal early in the game.

Read number clusters, not individual cells

Beginners look at one number at a time. Experts look at groups. When two adjacent numbers share the same remaining unrevealed neighbors, you can deduce which cells must be mines by subtraction.

The 1-2 pattern

When you see a "1" next to a "2" along a wall, the mine is always next to the "2," not the "1." This is one of the most common deducible patterns in Minesweeper and unlocks a huge number of chains.

Flag systematically

When you're certain a cell is a mine, flag it immediately. Flagged cells count against a number — if all adjacent mines are flagged, the remaining neighbors are safe. Chord-clicking (clicking a revealed number when all its mines are flagged) instantly reveals all safe neighbors.

Guess strategically when forced

Sometimes Minesweeper requires a guess. Make it count: choose cells that give you more information if safe (near many unrevealed numbers), and when probability is equal, choose corners of ambiguous zones where a wrong guess wastes less information.

The History of Minesweeper

Minesweeper was created in 1989 by Robert Donner at Microsoft. It shipped with Windows 3.1 in 1992 and became one of the most-played PC games in history — not through design but through ubiquity. Anyone who owned a Windows PC in the 1990s has at least one Minesweeper memory.

Microsoft removed it from default Windows installations in Windows 8, but the game never died. Browser versions proliferated. It remains among the most-searched casual games online, decades after its debut.
