How to Play Connect Four

1. The grid is 7 columns × 6 rows
2. Players alternate dropping discs into any column
3. Discs fall to the lowest open row in that column
4. First player to get 4 discs in a row (any direction) wins
5. If the grid fills with no winner, the game is a draw

Connect Four Strategy

Control the center. The middle column is the most valuable — discs there participate in more possible four-in-a-row combinations than edge columns. Open with center drops whenever possible.

Build threats in two directions. Create positions where you have two simultaneous ways to win. Your opponent can only block one — you win with the other.

Count your opponent's threats. Don't just think offensively. If your opponent has three in a row with an open space, block it — unless you can win first on your next move.

The "7" trap. A classic Connect Four setup: arrange discs in a pattern where winning one way also enables another win. Force your opponent to block high while you build low.

Odd vs. even rows matter. If you go first, you want your winning move on an odd row. The second player wins on even rows. This shapes which columns you should fight over.
